Afternoon Tea at the Cottage
Pam Hainy
was the featured speaker at Anne Hathaway Cottage at Shakespeare Gardens on
Thursday, November 3. She spoke about
her recent trip to Australia to a crowd of 22 people.
Pam
described the countryside, the food, the welcoming people, and the unique
animals of Australia. An Australian
football game, much different from the game played in the United States, was
part of the trip. Driving on the wrong
side of the road with a variety of unusual road signs and markings made travel
interesting as well.
Pam made
ANZAC Biscuits for the tea because of their history in Australia. ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand
Army corps. They were cookies traditionally sent by wives to their soldiers
during World War I because the ingredients were readily available and did not
spoil on the naval ships.
Mary Jane
Belz, accompanied by Pastor John Paulson on guitar, led the group in singing "Waltzing
Matilda", which is sometimes referred to as the national anthem of
Australia.
SGS board
members served treats and tea. The
sweets served were the ANZAC biscuits, Lamingtons, and traditional scones with
clotted cream and jam. Lamingtons are unique birthday, tea, or special occasion
sponge cake squares dipped in chocolate and rolled in desiccated coconut
The next
Winter Afternoon Tea is December 15 with a Christmas play presented by
Shakespeare Garden Society board members.
Proceeds from donations for the event go to the preservation and repairs of Anne
Hathaway Cottage and the gardens.
